The best price I've seen for Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Business (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote) is $235 at Amazon and NewEgg.
However, Fry's is offering just the product key for $199, http://www.frys.com/product/6234790?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG
It notes that this is intended for new computers that come with the product preloaded, but that "Software download is also available."
So can I download the software from Microsoft's Free Trial page http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/tr...OM_ENUS_HP_Try and activate it with the key from Fry's?

See Microsoft Office Online for the official Microsoft download page.

That might work, but it might not work because the key is designed for certain OEM preinstalled version.
There is a special redirect for product key card purchasers who do not have a preinstalled version: http://www.office.com/productkeycard (look for a big green download button, then click through and enter your license code). I wasn't able to actually test this myself.

This is NOT true. There is only one SKU, the retail version of Office 2010 Home & Student editon, which allows 3 installations per key. See the pricing and licensing section at Office 2010 Frequently Asked Questions - Products - Microsoft Office for details.

Joe, Copied directly from your link:
# 5 Can I install Office Home and Student 2010 on more than one device? It depends on what you purchase—a Traditional Disc or Product Key Card. If you purchase a Traditional Disc retail license of Office Home and Student 2010, the retail license terms allows you to install, activate, and use Office Home and Student 2010 on up to three PCs in a single household.
If you purchase the Office Home and Student 2010 Product Key Card, you can only activate and use Home and Student on one PC or device. For more information on what type of license you have purchased and to obtain an overview of your licensing agreement, visit the Microsoft Software License Terms (MSLT) for Office 2010
# 10 Can I install Office Home and Business 2010 and Office Professional 2010 on more than one PC?
It depends on what you purchase—a Traditional Disc or Product Key Card. If you purchase a Traditional Disc retail license of Office Home and Business 2010 or Office Professional 2010, the retail license terms allow you to install, activate, and use Office Home and Business 2010 or Office Professional 2010 on your primary PC and your portable device such as your laptop. This license is for your use exclusively.
If you purchase an Office 2010 Product Key Card, you can only activate and use the suite on one PC or device. For more information on the license you have purchased and to obtain an overview of your licensing agreement, visit the Microsoft Software License Terms (MSLT)
I guess I was wrong According to #10 you can only install on 2 PCs for commercial, personal use. The point I was making to the original post is that the Product Key Card only allows activation on 1 PC.BACKUP...BACKUP...BACKUP
